Of all Matisse's books, Jazz is undoubtedly the most important, revolutionizing the artist's work and the history of contemporary art... The war had darkened Paris, and the few lights that filtered through the windows seemed like miraculous jewels. It was this impression that Matisse wanted to convey by making these brightly colored stars explode against a black background' (Hommage à Tériade). Commenting on the illustrations, Matisse notes: 'Drawing with scissors. Cutting raw in color reminds me of the direct carving of sculptors'.
