The Three Wise Men are visitors who appear in the Gospel according to Matthew. After learning of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, they come "from the East", guided by the Star of Bethlehem, to pay homage to the "King of the Jews" and bring him gifts of great symbolic significance: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The Magi are traditionally known as Balthasar, Melchior, and Gaspar (or Caspar).
