The Magi are visitors who appear in an episode of the Gospel according to Matthew. Having learned of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, they come "from the East", guided by the Star of Bethlehem, to pay homage "to the King of the Jews" and bring him gifts of great symbolic richness: gold, myrrh and incense.
Magi have become known most commonly as Balthasar, Melchior, and Gaspar (or Casper). According to Western church tradition, Balthasar is often represented as a king of Arabia or sometimes Ethiopia, Melchior as a king of Persia, and Gaspar as a king of India.
