The Hippopotamus is a large, semi-aquatic mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is the third-largest land animal after the elephant and rhinoceros and is a member of the family Hippopotamidae. Hippopotamuses are most commonly found in rivers, lakes, and swamps.
Hippos are herbivores and spend most of their time in the water, where they can cool off and escape the hot African sun. They have powerful jaws and teeth, and can be very aggressive when threatened.
These large animals are also surprisingly good swimmers and can hold their breath underwater for up to five minutes.
