Death Note: from manga to anime
Death Note was created by writer Tsugumi Ohba and artist Takeshi Obata. The manga was published in Japan in the magazine Weekly Shonen Jump between 2003 and 2006. The story begins when Light Yagami, an exceptionally bright high school student, finds a notebook with supernatural powers: anyone whose name is written in it can die.
Light quickly decides to use this power according to his own view of justice. His actions attract the attention of the police and then of a mysterious detective known as L. Much of the series then focuses on their confrontation, each trying to understand the other's methods and intentions.
Takeshi Obata's highly detailed artwork contributes greatly to the series' identity, with very expressive characters, realistic settings and an often dark atmosphere. The manga was later adapted into an animated series in 2006, totaling 37 episodes. Several films, novels and complementary stories have also been produced around the Death Note universe.
Beyond its fantastical aspect, the series mainly explores questions of power, justice and responsibility. This is also why it continues to generate discussion long after its original publication.
