Vermeer's famous painting, The Girl with the Pearl, fascinates with the captivating gaze of its model. However, the work suffered a tumultuous fate after its creation, around 1665.
Painted for mysterious reasons, it disappeared for over two centuries before being rediscovered by chance, after having been sold for a derisory sum.
Restored, it has been exhibited at the Mauritshuis in The Hague since 1902. Although little recognized during Vermeer's lifetime, the reappearance of this painting has made it an artistic icon.
