Two Hoplites: Warriors in Ancient Greece

Hoplites were heavy infantrymen, citizen-soldiers of Greek city-states such as Athens and Sparta. The term 'hoplite' comes from the Greek word hoplon (ὅπλον), which referred to military equipment—specifically, the large round shield (aspis)—to which were added a crested helmet (often Corinthian), a bronze or hardened linen breastplate, a spear (dory), and a short sword (xiphos); they fought in a tight formation called a phalanx, feared for its discipline and power.
