At the center of the square stands the Column of the Goddess, a bronze statue symbolizing Lille's resistance to the siege by Austrian armies in 1792. As the Austrian general threatened to destroy the city, Mayor André asserted Lille's refusal to surrender and its loyalty to the nation. Inaugurated in 1845, the column celebrates Lille's heroism, recognized as having 'well deserved the Fatherland'.
