The Death of Epaminondas by David d'Angers (1811)
Epaminondas, a Theban general and politician of the 4th century BC, is best known for his decisive victory at the Battle of Leuctres in 371 BC, which weakened Spartan hegemony. He died in 362 BC at the battle of Mantinea, mortally wounded by a spear. His last moments were marked by his concern for the victory and safety of Thebes. His death marked the end of the brief Theban hegemony, as Thebes could not maintain its dominant position without him.
