The statue of Athena Parthenos stood some 12 meters high and was crafted in gold and ivory (chryselephantine technique).
It represented the power of Athens, with Athena as protector of the city, goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare.
It stood in the main cell (naos) of the Parthenon, a temple built under Pericles in the 5th century BC.
