Dr. Gachet, a key figure in Vincent Van Gogh's last period in Auvers, was a homeopathic physician with a wide range of interests, including palmistry, and a great passion for the arts. He was an engraver and maintained relationships with renowned artists such as Manet, Monet, Renoir and Cézanne. After his internment at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Van Gogh, on the recommendation of his brother Theo, went to see psychiatric specialist Dr. Gachet. Dr. Gachet supported Vincent in his struggle against his anxieties, and offered him a favorable setting for artistic creation.Van Gogh painted a portrait of Dr. Gachet, reflecting a period of great creativity. The portrait shows the doctor in a melancholy posture, symbolizing the turmoil of the time. However, a note of hope is provided by the foxglove flower, known for its healing properties.
