The mask worn by the man in the picture is a plague doctor's mask. This type of mask, recognizable by its long, curved beak, was worn in the 17th century by physicians in times of epidemic. The beak was often filled with herbs or aromatic substances intended to filter out 'miasmas' (bad smells perceived at the time as vectors of disease).
