The Colosseum, originally the Flavian amphitheatre, is an immense ovoid structure in the heart of Rome. Its construction, begun in 72 AD under Vespasian and completed in 80 AD under Titus, made it the largest amphitheatre in the Roman Empire.

A masterpiece of ancient engineering, it hosted shows for almost five centuries.
