A self-portrait emblematic of Kiki Kogelnik's pop and geometric aesthetic, this 1964 work fully reflects her research into identity, the body and modernity. The stylized forms, graphic solids and almost abstract construction of the face reflect a radically contemporary approach for the time, on the borderline between figuration and abstraction. An Austrian artist who moved to New York in the 1960s, Kiki Kogelnik was part of the Pop Art movement, but distinguished herself from it by her personal reflections on the human condition, femininity and the technological age. She is best known for her cut-out human silhouettes, her bold colors and her critical view of consumer society and industrial dehumanization. This self-portrait sums up her bold, experimental style, inviting free interpretation through coloring.
