Polynesia, the Sea is a cut-out gouache by Henri Matisse created in 1946, housed at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. A companion piece to Polynesia, the Sky, the work revives the painter's marine memories of Tahiti: fish, seaweed, corals and jellyfish unfold in white shapes against a rhythmic blue background.

Matisse achieves absolute graphic purity here, transforming nature into essential signs.
