Saint Peter's Square, Vatican City, Rome (Italy) (Countries, Cities and Monuments Coloring Page)
St. Peter's Square is a large esplanade in front of St. Peter's Basilica. It is located in the Vatican, the world's smallest country. Designed by the architect Le Bernin between 1656 and 1667, the square is elliptical in shape and surrounded by columns. In the center is an Egyptian obelisk, some 2,500 years old, transported to Rome by Emperor Caligula in the year 37, then placed in the square in 1586 by Pope Sixtus V.
St. Peter's Basilica, rebuilt between 1506 and 1626, boasts an imposing dome designed by Michelangelo from 1546.
